Treating Clinical Depression & Enhancing Mental Wellness

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Therapy is an FDA-approved, safe and effective non-pharmaceutical treatment for those who are not satisfied with the results of traditional talk therapy and prescription medications alone.
TMS Therapy uses highly focused magnetic pulses...
...(similar in type and strength to those produced by an MRI) to precisely target and stimulate key areas of the brain that control mood, pain, and cravings. These areas of the brain are known to be either overactive or underactive in certain neuropsychiatric disorders.
What is so remarkable about this treatment option is that it can provide better symptom relief without the side effects usually associated with medication. For most clients, symptoms decrease significantly or dissipate completely after 6 weeks of treatment with NeuroStar TMS Therapy, and there is substantial clinical evidence as well as an FDA approval to support these claims.
We use TMS THERAPY to Treat A VARIETY OF conditionS
At The Healing House, we specialize in treating the following:
✓TMS Therapy as an Intensive Treatment for Clinical Depression
Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) – TMS Therapy was FDA-cleared for treating depression in 2008 for those that are unresponsive to medication, have unwanted side effects, and/or are non-compliant to a medication regime. When treating depression, the focus of TMS Therapy is on the left Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex (DLPFC) region of the brain. This depolarizes the neurons in that lobe, stimulating monoamine neurotransmitters and increased function of the electrical circuits that drive brain activity. An increase in brain activity increases blood flow, oxygen levels and sugar metabolism; the result is improved activity of the 'feel good' neurotransmitters (dopamine, serotonin, norepinephrine) which drastically alleviates the symptoms of clinical depression and which provides an opportunity to achieve full remission for nearly half of the people that complete a...
...Standard Intensive Protocol for Depression:
•19 minutes per day
•5 days per week for 6 weeks
•High Frequency Activative Pulsing
•3,000 pulses total to left prefrontal cortex
Available intensive protocols range from 20-35 treatment sessions and are administered between anywhere from 4 to 8 weeks
✓TMS Therapy as a Standard Alternative or Supplemental Therapy
Because the standard protocol for depression is currently the only FDA-approved treatment option,
TMS Therapy is considered 'off-label' when we use it to treat the following:
General Anxiety Disorder (GAD) – The focus of this treatment is on the right Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex (DLPFC) region of the brain so that the neurons are polarized and that brain activity is better regulated. For those looking for anxiety relief beyond medication and behavioral therapy, TMS Therapy can be explored as an alternative and supplementary option. Most of our clients actually complete our 'Extended Anxiety Protocol' in tandem with the FDA-approved treatment for MDD, and this bilateral procedure addresses the common interplay between depression and anxiety for better overall mood stability.
Post-Detox Addiction – Addiction can be based either chemically or behaviorally. In both types of addiction, depression and anxiety are often the underlying issues. When depression and anxiety are not addressed, people tend to self-medicate with substances and/or different forms of behavior which, in turn, become habit-forming. Even when someone struggling with an addiction comes to terms with the need for change, it can still be a very difficult process coming off of substances or learning to cope with healthier behavior. TMS Therapy can help revitalize a better balance of biochemistry in these cases. It can also be used in tandem with other HH services to create what would be similar to an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). This is particularly beneficial for our clients on the back end of a Detox Program or for those with higher symptom acuity. TMS Therapy, under the care of a seasoned and certified psychiatrist, is also a great resource to help more readily 'wane off' of particular medications or certain types of behavior by aiming to alleviate withdrawals from medications like overprescribed pain medications. The Healing House uses well-studied international research protocols to address issues with, but not limited to, the habitual numbing effects of: alcohol, opiates, benzodiazepines, marijuana, and cocaine/methamphetamines, and behavioral addictions.
Emotional Trauma & Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) – PTSD is a debilitating anxiety disorder induced by traumatic experiences. To date, psychotherapy and prescription medications are what have been available to treat this condition, but most people struggling with PTSD continue to look beyond these therapies for relief. Particular TMS Therapy protocols can help alleviate the depression that accompanies ongoing PTSD while also targeting the overactive neurons in the brain's right prefrontal cortex to reduce the symptoms of associative anxiety. This type of anxiety-focused TMS Therapy, coupled with other technologies like Bio&Neuro Feedback, can serve as a viable alternative when it comes to treating PTSD & its heavily underserved population. The Healing House offers discounted rates for all military personnel (active duty members and veterans alike) who are frustrated with a lack of results from limited traditional therapy options...
✓TMS Therapy as an Elective Therapy
Additional off-label protocols are available for:
Obsessive & Fixated Thinking (Commonly Obsessive Compulsive Disorder)
Inhibitory Pulsing to the Frontal Lobe
Cognitive Impairment (including Autism)
Cognitive Enhancement (Primarily Energy, Memory, & Performance)
Evidence-Based results WITH TMS THERAPY for depression
• Nearly 3 of 4 improved significantly (Significance = 50% Symptom Relief)
• Nearly 1 in 2 achieved full remission (free of symptoms)
• Sustainable symptom relief for over 12 months (maintenance therapy as needed)
*Clinical study data was presented at the American Psychiatric Association’s 2013 Annual Conference. The TMS study’s investigator, Linda L. Carpenter, M.D., Professor at Brown University School of Medicine, and Chief of The Mood Disorder’s Program, Butler Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island.
SIDE EFFECTS? NONE TO MINIMAL, and TEMPORARY.
This alternative treatment is not systemic, meaning it does not circulate throughout the entire body like prescription medications. TMS Therapy is localized and is administered while you are awake & conscious, and there are no serious side effects. The most common side effect is mild scalp discomfort which typically subsides after the first few treatment sessions and can be alleviated with over-the-counter pain relievers if necessary.
What is the procedure like?
SPECIFIC TREATMENT GUIDELINES:
- TMS Therapy is available only under a Physician's supervision.
- Treatment is delivered while you are reclined in a comfortable chair.
- You will remain awake and alert during treatment; there is no negative effect on normal cognitive abilities.
- Treatment is conducted for between 19 and 55 minutes each session, depending on the condition/prescribed protocol.
- Intensive treatment is typically administered 5 days per week for 6 weeks, depending on the condition/prescribed protocol.
- You are able to resume regular activities after completing a treatment session so that you are able to drive yourself to the treatment facility and so that you can easily get back to daily responsibilities or move into another treatment modality.
- You may continue using medications while completing a TMS Therapy regime, and integrative psychiatric supervision is required to ensure that this combination therapy is administered properly.
IS TMS THERAPY RIGHT FOR YOU?

- I have had, or have worried about, side effects from medication.
- I am interested in a proven, non-prescription therapy and need help navigating the process.
